
Playoffs - Round 4 - Royals vs Winterhawks
Fri. Apr. 6 in Saugeen 7:00pm
Game 1 Tavistock 4 Saugeen Shores 5
First period Winterhawks came out skating and hitting hard,
frustrating the Royals into taking unnecessary penalties and giving
Saugeen two goals on power plays. The Royals now forced to play
catch up hockey were reward from Cody Hall in the second period with
two quick unanswered goals with Shawn Greets, Marcus Yantzi and
Trent Brown assisting. Unfortunately Saugeen not to be denied took
the lead once again on a valiant effort from Doug Groenestege with
the Royals in holding back the Wintehawks. Tyler Townsend who has
had an outstand playoff series with two minutes left scored form
Tyler Roth and Marcus Yantzi sending the Royals into the third
period tied three all. Saugeen came out hard in the third and soon
where rewarded with two more goals. Tyler Roth with five minute left
buried the puck past Saugeens netminder giving the Royals an
opportunity to tie but the time clock was in favor of the
Winterhawks all night. Assisting on the goal was Trent Brown and
Tyler Townsend.

Game 2 Tavistock 2 Saugeen Shores 3
With the Winterhawks leading the series the Royals knew they had to
start with the first goals and Andrew Oesch was just the player to
do so with Green and Ruthig assisting. The Royals with their early
goal held on as the Winterhawks pressed hard but ended the first
period with the Royals leading. Into the second period Saugeen
rebounded and soon tied form Steve Shields. And on a power play half
way into the second Saugeen took the lead with a goal from Brent
MacDermid. The Royals scored from Tyler Townsend with Reid Yantzi
assisting on a power play ended the seconded with a 2-2 tie. Third
period was scoreless with both net minders making outstanding saves
keeping the game close and giving each team the opportunity to win.
But as the game played in overtime the Royals were given chances to
win but were unable to score. Saugeen with 3 minutes gave them a two
game lead in the series. Game 3 is in Port Elgin Friday April 13,

If you are superstitious you could blame the loss Friday night
that it was played on the 13th and that black cat crossed that path
of the Royals bus several times as the Winterhawks defeated the
Royals 5-3 giving them a 3 game lead into the series. Although
Saugeen is a good team the Royals haven’t played to their full
potential. Kyle Roes, Wes Kropf and Kevin Brenneman gave the Royals
their goals with assists coming from Shawn Greets, Tyler Townseen,
Cody Hall and Kyle Roes and Wes Kropf. Let’s hope that our luck
changes into Sunday nights game.

Playoffs - Round 3 - Royals vs Thunder
Game 5 Tavistock 4 - Tillsonburg 1
Royals defeat the Thunder taking the series in five games becoming
the 2012 Southern Champions. With Doug Groenestege in net Andrew
Oesch lead the scoring assist come from Trent Brown in the first
period. Second period Trent Brown form Andrew Oesch and Cody Hall
scoring assisting Chad Swartzentruber. The Thunder managed to get on
the score board in the second but were unable to progress any
further, the Royals battled hard and keep the Thunder at bay. What
seemed to be a lopsided game when it came to penalty’s the Royals
finished the series in the third with one more goals from Shaun
Greets .
Game 4 Tavistock 4 - Tillsonburg 2
Game four in Tillsonburg the Royals rebounded from their loss at
home with a 4 -2 victory. Goals came from Trent Brown, Tyler Roth,
Wes Kropf, and Chad Swartzentruber. Assisting in the goals were
Tyler Roth with two assist Tyler Townsend with two and Wes Kropf and
Trent Brown with single assists. Although some foolish penalties
were taken the Royals with grit and determination put the series
within one game to take the series and defeat the Thunder.
Game 3 Tavistock 3 - Tillsonburg 5
With the Thunder coming out strong and battling hard against the
Royals this series has proven to be exciting. The outcome for the
series winner will be hard fought and well deserved. First period
Thunder scored four minutes into the game, but the Royals soon
followed with a goal from Cody Hall assisting Chad Swartzentruber.
The Thunder ended the second going ahead 2-1. A penalty filled
second period gave the Thunder three more goals sealing the Royals
fate. Kirk Rioux form Brenneman and Swartzentruber managed to close
the gap. But as the Royals started the third with a goalie change
and a valiant effort from Hall scoring from Marcus Yantzi and Jeff
Roes were unable to hold back the Thunder giving Tillsonburg a 5-3
victory and a game win in the series.
Game 2 Tavistock 4 - Tillsonburg 3
Although at times it seemed that the Royals lacked the intensity and
the desire to win they seem too turned it on when needed. The
Thunder scoring first in the first period were soon answered back
with a goal from Tyler Roth assisting Swartzentruber and Townsend.
Second period brought frustration from the Thunder that resulted in
a wave of penalties. And the lack of ability from the Royals to
surge ahead gave the Thunder a two goal lead in the third. But the
combination of Townsend , Swartzentruber and Roth narrowed the gap
with five minutes left in the game. And as the Thunder received a
well-deserved penalty Coach McLaren pulled their goalie giving Wes
Kropf the tying goal making believers out of the none believers.
Overtime brought the Royals fans to their feet as they cheered for
the win with two minute into the game Cody Hall with his stick
handling ability magical slid the puck past the netminder. The
Royals now have a two game lead.
Game 1 Tavistock 4 - Tillsonburg 2
Friday night the Royals faced the Tillsonburg Thunder in the 3rd
round of play-offs which should be an exciting series. Evan
Groenestege was in net and kept the first period scoreless as he
made acrobatic saves to give the Royals every opportunity to score
first. And so they did in the first five minutes of the second
period as Shaun Greets from Cody Hall put the Royals on the score
board. But the Thunder managed to end the period leading 2-1 with to
unanswered goals that brought a hush to the crowd and a feeling of
unbelief. The Royals in the third period form Chad Swartzentruber
sporting a broken nose tied the game up on an unassisted goal ten
minutes in the period. Swartzentruber taking a brutal elbow to the
head, giving the Thunder a penalty which gave Tyler Roth from the
Royals the go ahead goal as he neatly tip it in form Townsend and
Brown. The Royals taking a questionable penalty with two minutes
left where playing desperate hockey to maintain their lead as the
Thunder were pressing hard with a man advantage and a pulled goalie.
But Evan playing outstandingly gave Andrew Oesch a goal on an open
net that sealed the Royals their first victory.
Playoffs - Round 2 - Royals vs Squires
Game 5 Tavistock 8 - Petrolia 4
A win Wednesday night in Tavistock would send the Royals into the
3rd round of play offs against Tillsonburg Thunder. But Petrolia had
other plans as they lead the first half of the period with two
unanswered goals against Doug Groenestege. Coach Dave Mclaren kept
the team focused and play disciplined hockey using our skating skill
on our larger ice rink. The Royals answered back with three quick
goals from Graig Thomson assisting Tyler Roth, Andrew Oesch with the
second goal from Roth and Townsend tying it up. Cody Hall form Shaun
Greets giving Tavi the go ahead goal changing the pace of the game
and swinging the momentum. Petrolia manage one more goal but that
was quickly challenged by Jeff Roes assisting Hall and
Swartzentruber. Second period it was all Tavistock as Dan
Kalbfleisch scored unassisted and Townsend from Kyle Roes and Oesch
end the period with the Royals leading 6-3. Third period Shaun
Geerts with two goals and Jeff Roes assisting on the second goal
sealed Petrolia’s fate. Their goalie change along with a final
effort to press Tavistock were unable to penetrate Doug Groenestege
as he made spectacular saves up to the final seconds.
Game 4 Tavistock 2 - Petrolia 1
Tavistock Royals battle the Petrolia Squires for their fourth game
of the series in front of a crowd that was as pumped as the players
on the ice. With some key players missing the Royals showed their
depth and talent as the team battled against the Squires.
Goaltending was outstanding on either end of the rink as both teams
drove hard to the net trying to intimate the net minders. Staying
out of the penalty box and playing their game gave the Royals the
first goals by Kevin Brenneman assisted by Cody Hall and Andrew
Oesch. Second period Doug Groenestege showed why he is considered as
one of the best goalies in the league giving the Royals every
opportunity to win the series. Third period neither team let up and
maintained the intensity but with 3minutes left James Edgar from
Petrolia tied up the game sending the game into overtime once again.
The Royals playing with a lot of desire were rewarded with a hard
drive from Andrew Oesch as he drove towards Justin Day and planted
the puck into the top left corner of the net, giving the Tavistock
the opportunity to finish the series Wednesday night 7:30 on home
ice.
Game 3 Tavistock 3 - Petrolia 5
The Royals had their game cut out for them Friday night in Petrolia
as the Squires with two games down where not about to roll over. In
an evenly matched game Petrolia with two minutes left in the first
capitalized on Doug Groenestege. Tyler Townsend from Swartzentruber
and Smith with 26seconds left tied it up to end the first period
bringing on a sigh of relief to the Tavistock fans that were in
attendance. Second period Tyler Townsend who seems too always have a
stellar performance in Petrolia gave the Royals a 2-1 lead a minute
into the second assisted by Reid Yantzi. But that was short lived as
the Squires out shot and played the Royals to end the second with
three unanswered goals. Third period Petrolia with more discipline
and determination increased the lead. Kevin Brenneman with a high
loop shot on goaltender Justin Day gave the Royals a glimmer of hope
but were unable to come back.
Game 2 Tavistock 4 - Petrolia 3
The Intensity from Friday’s game in Petrolia was brought home as both the Royals and the Squires continued the series in a fast and hard hitting game which brought forth very exciting hockey. First period both teams were scoreless but half way into the second it was Tyler Roth who was award a goal as he drove hard beating Chris Houle from the Squires. Cody Hall three minutes later on a power play from Greets and Swartzentruber gave Tavi a 2-0 lead. But the Squires not to be denied 16:40 into the second on a power play put the puck behind goaltender Doug Groenestege. Tyler Roth with his second assisted by Trent Brown gave the Royals a 3-1 lead a minute after. Third period Petrolia narrowed the lead sparking Greets form Hall to hold the Squires to a two goal lead. James Edgar for Petrolia once again closing the gap but were unable to beat the Royals as they head back to Petrolia leading the series.
Game 1 Tavistock 2 - Petrolia 1
Intensity filled the air as the Royals entered the arena for the
second round of playoffs. With the drop of the puck in the first
period it was obvious this would be a high hitting and fast game.
Both goaltenders were on their game making excellent stops on both
ends of the ice. Petrolia with ten minutes into the game scored on
the Royals that brought on hard hitting and a lot of penalties in
the next two periods. Doug Groenestege was outstanding as he gave
the Royals the opportunity to tie the game. And with 16 seconds left
Cody Hall brought the Tavistock fans to their feet as he buried one
by Justin Day. Shawn Greets and Reid Yantzi assisted sending the
game into sudden death overtime. Tyler Townsend with a minute and
half into overtime drove hard towards Petrolia’s net giving the
Royals their first win against the Squires.
Playoffs - Round 1 - Royals vs Pirates
Game 4 - Tavistock 5 Goderich 4
Saturday was Pork Barbecue night in Tavistock and the Royals ending
the season for the Pirates in a 5-4 victory. Scoring came from Kevin
Brennemanin with two goals in the second along with Shaun Geerts
with two goals. Jeff Roes with one goal ended the scoring for the
Royals. Third period the pirates came on strong with four unanswered
goals but were unable to penetrate paste Evan Groenestege. Royals
assists came from Marcus Yantzi ,Reid Yantzi ,Shaun Geerts ,Jeff
Roes and Kyle Roes.
Game 3 - Tavistock 6 - Goderich 3
Friday night in Goderich the Royals came away with a 6-3 victory
over the Pirates. Cody Hall on a hot streak had three goals and two
assists. Jeff Roes with two goals and Reid Yantzi with one gave the
Royals a three game advantage over the pirates in the series. Assist
in the evening came for Shawn Geerts with five Kyle Roes with three
Hall with two and Jeff Roes with one.
Game 2 - Tavistock 9 - Goderich 1
Saturday night in Tavistock it was the Royals dominating again with
Jeff Roes capitalizing in the first with the only goal in the
period. Second period brought Swartzentruber and Kalbflieisch on
board ending the period with the Royals leading 3-0. Third period
Cody Hall was on fire with four goals and one assist. Jeff Roes and
Wes Kropf also getting on the band wagon. The Pirates manage their
only goal from a controversial third period that saw Goderich coach
ejected from the game after literally throwing the towel on the ice
mocking the officiating along with other frustrated Goderich
players. The Royals played with discipline and Doug Groenestege
showed restraint which reflected on the score board. Assist for the
Royals came from Swartzentruber getting four Geerts, Ruben getting
two along with Roth ,Oesch Green, Brown and Hall each getting a
point.
Game 1 - Tavistock 9 - Goderich 3
Friday the Royals started their play offs in Goderich with Doug
Groenestege fending off the pirates in a 9-3 victory. Townsend had a
hat trick and one assist for the evening along with Brown ,Hall
,Roth ,Jeff Roes and Marcus Yantzi ,Green and Oesch finishing of the
scoring .Assist came from Swartzentruber, Kropf and Brown each
getting three assist .Townsend ,Hall and Roth getting single
assists.
Sat. Jan 28 Tavistock 6 - Tillsonburg 4
The Royals played their final game of the season before play offs. In front of a good crowd that watched their first place team beat the Tillsonburg Thunder 6-4. Tyler Roth with a lovely tip in from Chad Swartzentruber put Tavi on the score board early in the game. The Thunder not to be denied tied it up within minutes on a shorthanded goal and soon pulled away leading the Royals scoring on a power play. Adam Renkema from Dan Kalbfleisch scored tying the game along with Shaun Greets from Ruthig putting Tavi ahead. Tyler Townsend on a power play from Brenneman and Reid Yantzi widen the gap. Second period Horvath scored for the Thunder while Shaun Greets received his second goal of the evening for the Royals and with 35 seconds left Jeff Roes form Ruthig and Greets finished the scoring in the second period. Third period the Thunder pressing hard were unable to penetrate past Evan Groennestege until the final two minutes. Tillsonburg on a power play pulled their goalie in the last minute of the game and tried feverishly but Evan was solid making breath taking stops. On to the play offs GOOD LUCK ROYALS.
Fri. Jan 20 Tavistock 5 - Clinton 3
Clinton came out all fired up ready to beat the Royals in their new
arena, but a lack of discipline sealed their fate. Clinton’s player
Luke Vick scored giving the Radars the lead in the first period
which was filled with penalties and a lot of liberty taken against
the Royals. Tyler Townsend with a minute left on a two man power
play lit up the back of the net tying it up in the first. Second
period was a carbon copy of the first Clinton scored first on a
shorthanded goal early with Adam Renkema following to even it up.
With two minutes left in the second Oesch from Saunders gave the
Royals the lead at the end of the second. Third period Townsend and
Oesch finished the scoring for the Royals. Clinton in the final
minutes managed one more goal but Evan Groenestege fended of the
Radars as they pulled their goalie and swarmed Tavistock's net
minder and were unable to capitalize.
Sat. Jan 14 Tavistock 10 - Goderich 3
Royals back in the grove, and easily defeated Goderich 10 -3 Saturday night. Although the Pirates scored first on a power play, Wes Kropf streaking down the wing planted one by Goderich tying the score in the first Rioux and Kyle Roes assisting. Second period the Royals scored on a shorthanded goal from Green. Jeff Roes and Renkema also scored windening the gap. The Pirates were able to get two more goals in the second but the Royals with 35 seconds left came with a goal from Cody Hall. Third period Kyle Roes and Jeff along with Swartzentruber, Dan Kalbfleisch and Saunders demoralized the Pirates. Coach Dave Mclaren kept the team focused and they stuck to their game plan. A frustrated Goderich team could not shake Doug Groenestege with a lot of intimidating and bantering. Their efforts have shown on the scoreboard and in their standings. The Royals Congratulate Sean Burton #77 from Goderich receiving 1000 points in 22 seasons and 504 game a milestone for Sean in the league.
Fri. Jan 6 Tavistock 3 - Monkton 5
Royals and Monkton came out in the first period hitting hard each trying to get on the board first. The Wildcats with one of the best goalies in the league subdued Tavi ending the period with a 2-0 lead. Frustrated by their power play and a bouncing puck the Royals midway in the second managed to score from Townsend assists coming from Tyler Roth and Wes Kropf. The Wildcats capitalized on their power play and scored shorthanded ended the period leading 4-1. Wildcats fifth goal in the third turned the tide for Royals. Hovering around Monkton’s goalie and screening every shot gave Saunders a goal and Jeff Roes following minutes later. But with only a minute and 30 seconds left the Royals pulled their goalie. But could not score sending them home with a 5 to 3 loss.
Tue Dec 27 Tavistock 6 - Tillsonburg 1
Royals player Tyler Roth blasted the puck past Brandon Rohrer within 40 seconds in the start of the game assisted by Kyle Roes and Townsend. Tavistocks defenseman Brenneman received a 5 minute penalty for slashing after being kneed by one of the Tillsonburg player that was missed by the Referee. Setting the tone in the second period where the Royals had a man in the box for 19 of the 20 minutes. Royals not deviating took on the adversity came back with a shorthanded goal from Kirk Rioux assisted by Reid Yantzi. Six minutes left in the second Reid Yantzi followed with a goal from Saunders and Kropf assisting. Oesch and Swartzentruber also scoring in the 2nd assists coming from Rioux, Smith and Saunders. Thunder managed their only goal in the 2nd by Tyler Lamb. Third period Jeff Roes with Oesch and Marcus Yantzi finished the scoring for the Royals. Evan Groenestege stellar performance gave the Royals the win with unbelievable goaltending. The Royals played superbly fending off the Thunder and maintaining their standing in the division.
Fri Nov 4 Tavistock 9 - Goderich 1
Christmas came early for the Royals as they easily defeated the Pirates 9 to 1 Friday evening. Goals in the first period came quickly from Wes Kropf, two goals for Andrew Oesch and two goals for Tyler Townsend. Goderich managed one goal in the first. Royals assists came from Tyler Roth, Swartzentruber, Brenneman, Smith, Saunders, Townsend and Kropf. Early in the second period Ruben Smith form Geerts followed by Andrew Oesch getting a hat trick assist from Swartzentruber. Third period the Royals unrelenting continued the scoring with Dan Kalbfleisch, Roth and Townsend assisting. Geerts unassisted with his first goal for the Royals as a newly acquired player finished the evening.
Sat Dec 17 Tavistock 6 - Petrolia 5
Royals get an early start against the Squires with a quick goal that was unassisted by Tyler Townsend with less then a minute into the game. Wes Kropf from Tyler Roth and Brenneman was also awarded with a goal giving Tavi an early lead. Petrolia with 5 minutes in the 1st on a short handed goal was able to get one by goaltender Evans Groenestege ending the penalty filled period. Dan Kalbfleisch with assists from Kyle Roes and Brenneman capitalized early in the 2nd period with Jeff Roes getting an unassisted goal giving the Royals a 4-1 lead. Petrolia crashing the netminder was able to squeak one in the net. Royals player #4 Townsend with assists from Roth and Kropf ended the scoring for the Royals in the 2nd. Petrolia narrowed the lead with two unanswered goals. The 3rd period with the Royals short handed were unable to contained the Squires found themselves in a tie game. Marcus Yantzi with a harmless shot on the net sealed Petrolia’s fate giving Tavi a 6-5 win. Sat Dec 10 Tavistock 4 - Milverton 7
Tribute artist Doug Mckenzie sang the Canadian anthem Saturday night
but as Elvis left the building so did the Royals.
Tyler Roth with 64 seconds into the game assisted by Kropf and
Townsend put the Royals on the scoreboard first giving the fans a
false impression that the Royals would have an easy win. Milverton
16 seconds later showed the Royals they were there to play serious
hockey getting one by goaltender Evan Groenestege. Within 3 minutes
Mark Pfohl was awarded his second goalie of the period. Reid Yantzi
quickly answered back with Kropf and Townsend holding back Milverton.
But the 4Wheel Drives drove ahead with two more unanswered goals.
Roth with 40seconds held Milverton to a one goal lead with Townsend
and Saunders assisting. In the second with a goaltender change for
the Royals, Doug was unable to keep Mark Pfohl from getting a hat
trick. Andrew Oesch with Townsend and Cody Hall finished the scoring
for the Royals for the evening. Millerton with 2seconds scored
unassisted by Cary Werth. Third period the Royals were unable to
contain Milverton who scored one more time finishing the game.
Resulting in a 7-4 loss for the Royals.
The Royals will be holding Kids Night Dec. 17 at 8:30pm against
Petrolia.
